A Young Leader Making a Big Difference

Every tax season, thousands of individuals and families in Middle Tennessee count on the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program — powered by United Way of Greater Nashville — to file their taxes correctly, and at no cost. For many, these refunds help keep food on the table, pay rent, cover medical bills, and build a more stable financial future.

Behind each return is a caring volunteer who steps up, shows up, and turns financial stress into relief and gratitude.

One of those volunteers is Constantine, a student at Hume-Fogg High School — and a shining example of what it means to be a hand-raiser in our community.

“I wanted to volunteer with United Way’s VITA program because I saw it as a new and interesting opportunity — something I wouldn’t learn in school. It’s a chance to help real people from all sorts of backgrounds,” said Constantine.

As a returning VITA volunteer, Constantine has already helped multiple neighbors file their taxes and access the refunds and credits they’ve earned. But for him, the most meaningful moments aren’t about tax forms — they’re about people.

“One memorable moment was helping a retired woman who only had Social Security to report. It was a simple return, but she thanked me so sincerely. When someone like her truly appreciates what you do, it makes the entire experience unforgettable,” added Constantine.

Through VITA, Constantine discovered both a valuable life skill and the joy of service. He represents the next generation of financial helpers and community builders — and his story proves that anyone can make an impact.

“Constantine exemplifies the spirit of VITA – showing up with compassion, curiosity and a genuine desire to help. His dedication and professionalism as a high school volunteer are truly inspiring. We are proud to have him as part of our team,” said Brandee Davis-Douglas, Director, Economic and Financial Mobility at United Way of Greater Nashville.
