United Way Volunteers and Habitat for Humanity Help a Local Family Build Their Future

On Sunday, October 12, fifteen members of United Way of Greater Nashville’s Young Leaders Society and Patricia Hart Society traded their weekend plans for hard hats and hammers. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville, they helped build a new home for a local family—showing what’s possible when compassion meets action.

These volunteers are part of United Way’s affinity groups who give $500 or more annually and give their time to create lasting impact. Each board nailed and wall raised was a tangible expression of hope and community.

Rahmo, a Habitat for Humanity homeownership program participant, was born in Somalia and moved to the U.S. in 2004 seeking a better life for her family. She now lives in Nashville with six children, ages 5 to 17, and dreams of a home where they can grow and thrive.

“Homeownership means stability, a better space for my kids, and community involvement,” Rahmo said. “I’m excited for a brighter future.”

Her current apartment is too small for her family’s needs. Through Habitat’s homeownership program, Rahmo is building the foundation—literally and figuratively—for stability, opportunity, and connection.

“We’re a family that values hard work and community,” she added. “We are excited to partner with Habitat for Humanity and are grateful for the chance to learn and build alongside the volunteers.”

“I showed up thinking I’d just be hammering nails,” Kerry said, “but ended up building friendships and learning how to properly frame in a door. Teamwork really does make the dream work.” That spirit of teamwork and giving back defines what it means to be part of United Way’s affinity groups—individuals who not only invest in their community but show up to build it.

Habitat’s program supports families willing to put in sweat equity, working side by side with volunteers to make homeownership possible. United Way proudly funds and volunteers with Habitat to help families like Rahmo’s achieve lasting change.

“Seeing the support from sponsors and volunteers will be incredibly moving,” Rahmo said. “I’m so grateful to everyone helping us build our future.”

A house dedication celebration is scheduled for early February, when the community will come together again to celebrate the completion of the home and welcome Rahmo’s family into their new chapter.

When you give through United Way—whether your gift is time, talent, or treasure—you’re helping neighbors like Rahmo build brighter futures.

Together, we’re not just building homes—we’re building hope.
