My Granny is a Pirate

Sept. 22, 2021

Granny is as nifty with a cutlass as she is with a handbag, and no matter how many pirate crews she’s captured that day, she is always home in time for tea (and a tankard of grog, of course). This story is an absolute joy to read aloud.

Fun Daily Activities

Sept. 20 Treasure Scavenger Hunt: Tell your kids to grab their sword, eye patch and bandana because they’re goin’ on a treasure hunt! Don’t worry, your shovel won’t see a speck of dirt and there’s no swashbuckling or pillaging required.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Use this template to cut out the numbered treasure hunt clues or write them on construction paper!
  2. Hide the clues in their designated spots. We included a cheat sheet but try to guess where they go if you want a little challenge for yourself.
  3. Hand your children the first clue, ask them do their best pirate impression and set them on their way! Tip: If your children need help, use the old “hot and cold” method of helping them zero in on a clue.
  4. At the end of the hunt, you’ll need a “treasure.” If you don’t have gold doubloons, don’t fret! Your treasure can be a piece of candy or a love note from you. You could even surprise them with a scroll that says you’re going to go see a movie. Or, if you’re feeling brave, you could offer a “No Rules Night.”

Sept. 21 Sensory Play Day: These sensory and imaginative play activities give kids the opportunity to practice their language and cooperation skills. It also lets them use their imaginations and play act what they’ve been learning. The sensory aspects of this play engage the kids on different levels via their five senses, allowing them to learn and react in a physical manner.

  • Walk the Plank Activity – Use blue water beads to act as the ocean for this activity. Place them in a long plastic bin on top of a tarp. Use a long wooden block to place across the top of the box over the “ocean.” Add small plastic sharks and pirates for some extra imaginative play. View sample image here.
  • Play Sand Recipe – Use this basic toddler-safe sand recipe (mix 8 parts whole-wheat flour with 1 part vegetable oil) for some at-home beach fun!

Sept. 22 Count Your Treasure: Pirates, it’s time to practice counting your treasure! Enjoy online play and learning by heading here.

Sept. 23 Tailgate Brewery + Imagination Library: It’s a treasure day for all the parents! Enjoy some family-friendly time at Tailgate Brewery‘s Nashville West location at 7300 Charlotte Pike, Nashville where $1 from every pint goes back to Imagination Library. This seven-acre brewery features a large taproom, outdoor bar and slice shop, giant outdoor area, covered ‘Barn’, scratch pizza kitchen and ice cream shop.

Sept. 24 Park Day: You did it! Give yourselves a hearty hug, pirates. Close out your week by visiting your favorite park for outdoor play. Take your favorite books and snacks and read outside.
