FEC Spotlight: Jamie’s Financial Journey

Apr 13, 2022 | Blog

Jamie Lewis-Stewart, from Murfreesboro, spent nearly a decade working inside the banking system before joining the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) as financial counselor in 2020. For Financial Literacy Month, she offers a few thoughts on her journey and how her understanding has changed over time.

“My dad never met a dollar he couldn’t spend, and my mom never met a dollar she couldn’t save,” Jamie says. “The wakeup moment for me was when I started working in banking. It’s very common for people to think of a credit score as whether they’ll qualify for a loan or not. I think about credit as how low of an interest rate I’m going to get. Just because a loan contract is legal doesn’t mean it’s good.

Jamie helps residents throughout our community understand the fundamentals of financial literacy. “Obviously, we can talk about how we wish the system were different, but at the end of the day, we have a system that we have to work within.” Jamie works with clients to explore financial challenges, set goals and layout the steps to achieving them.
