Making an Impact: Davidson County

Davidson County, the heart of Middle Tennessee, is a dynamic region that combines the vibrancy of urban living with the warmth of Southern hospitality. Home to the states Capitol and a hub for music, health care and education, Davidson County offers endless opportunities for residents and businesses to thrive. The county’s diverse neighborhoods, cultural landmarks and thriving economy make it a special place to live, work and explore. We are proud to collaborate with local residents and organizations to continue building a prosperous future for Davidson County.

A look at our work.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Each year, United Way volunteers help thousands of low-income and at-risk taxpayers prepare their taxes through the VITA free tax preparation program. In 2025, we’re offering in-person and virtual VITA tax prep throughout Davidson County.

Financial Empowerment Center
The Nashville Financial Empowerment Center offers no-cost one-on-one financial counseling to residents in the Greater Nashville region. In partnership with the Mayor’s Office, the FEC helps people move from a state of instability to a state of empowerment with new savings habits, higher credit scores and lower debt burdens.

SNAP E&T
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment and Training (E&T) helps eligible participants achieve their vocational goals and increase self-sufficiency through funded education, skills training and supportive services. Funded by the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS), and the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD), UWGN plays a pivotal role as the statewide intermediary, in connecting eligible SNAP recipients to training providers offering essential soft skills and industry specific training. Through collaboration with multiple partners, UWGN aims to focus its efforts on addressing skilled labor shortages that align with the in-demand job sectors of healthcare, manufacturing hospitality and tourism to assist individuals with achieving economic self-sufficiency through skill-building, education, and employment. Hands On Volunteer Opportunities
Community volunteers can team up with local nonprofits to complete projects that enhance their work and help serve our most vulnerable neighbors. Visit the Hands On website to find your opportunity!

Raising Readers Nashville
Raising Readers Nashville is a collaborative community group uniting to improve the systems and structures that support Nashville’s families and young children, cultivating an environment where all children can grow the reading skills they need to thrive.

Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee
In partnership with the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation and the Dollywood Foundation, Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee delivers an age-appropriate, high-quality book each month straight to Davidson County children’s mailboxes at no cost to families.

Read To Succeed
Read To Succeed is a comprehensive early childhood learning model that builds academic and social-emotional skills for children from birth through age 5. Through Read To Succeed, children learn the skills they need to reach their highest potential.

The Family Collective
Kids who experience homelessness face many obstacles to reaching their potential, like lack of resources, frequent school changes, loss of school records and emotional stress. That’s why The Family Collective is preventing and ending family homelessness by connecting families to sustainable opportunities and disrupting cycles of poverty.

Days of Action
United Way’s Days of Action are community-wide volunteer opportunities. Each year, thousands of volunteers come together to support our work and improve the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors through initiatives such as Stuff the Bus and Give Thanks.

211 Helpline
211 is a free and confidential service helping people find the local resources they need for help in times of crisis and beyond. 211 Navigators are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, to provide tailored guidance for those in need. Resources are accessible 24/7 on the 211 website. Click here to learn more or search for services in your area.
