About VITA

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) created the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax prep program to provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers using community partners and volunteers. Each year, United Way volunteers help thousands of individuals and families prepare their taxes.

Visit volunteerforvita.org to learn how you can volunteer with VITA.

Why We Help

We help because we want people to keep more of what they earn.

During the 2023 tax season, United Way and the VITA free tax prep program completed 9,712 tax returns, helped taxpayers save $2.6 million in tax preparation fees and brought $10.3 million in federal refunds back to the community.

All of this was done with the help of VITA volunteers.
