Give Thanks: Providing food relief this holiday season

Aug 30, 2019 | News

The holidays are an expensive time for many in our community.

Thanksgiving, a holiday centered around food and celebrating, can be especially difficult for families who have a limited food budget to begin with.

The average family of four enrolled in SNAP—or food stamps—receives $465 a month for food, which breaks down to $5.16 per meal. The average cost of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner is roughly $60. That’s 12 times the amount a family has to spend on a single meal.

This season through our Give Thanks Day of Action, we’re tackling food insecurity in our community by providing food to individuals and families who need it most.

And you can help.

Participating companies, groups and organizations can assemble Give Thanks boxes filled with all the food needed for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, along with supplemental food to feed a family through the holiday weekend.

United Way will provide your group with a list of all required food items per box, along with an easy-to-follow How-To Guide. Groups will have until Nov. 18 to collect and assemble boxes. On Nov. 20, 200 volunteers will be needed to deliver those boxes to selected agencies and Family Resource Centers throughout Nashville.

If you think you’d like to participate or learn more, contact your account manager or Megan McGuire to get started.

Nearly 26,000 children in our community wake up and go to bed hungry.

Together, we can help relieve the burden on families this holiday season.
