2/1/2022: Partnerships Supporting Mathematical Foundations in Young Children | Presenter: Dr. Maria Trejo

Join Dr. Maria Trejo as she presents, “Partnership: Educators, Parents, and Caregivers Supporting Mathematical Foundations for Young Children.”

Parents are key role models for children. When adults become excited about mathematics and continuously provide overt opportunities for children to develop mathematics awareness and mathematics used in daily life, children enjoy and learn concepts much quicker. Children’s love for using numbers and math functions to solve problems is heightened. The role of educators is to convey to parents the importance of mathematics and what they can do to support their children at home. Teachers convey to caregivers what preschool mathematics is about, what are age-appropriate expectations, and how mathematics learning is supported in the centers or preschools. These understanding are key to partnerships for enhancing early learnings of basic mathematical concepts and uses.

The purpose of the webinar will be to explore more meaningful and direct ways that parents and caregivers can support early mathematics development in young children. Examples will be provided of a variety of home activities and practices that can be readily done in the home and in the community. These will be presented so that parents and caregivers gain basic understanding about what children need to learn in each of the 5 domains: Number Sense, Algebra and Functions, Measurement, Geometry, and mathematical reasoning. Caregivers and parents will gain awareness of how best to help their children develop mathematical foundations, and how best to support the instruction provided at the centers or schools.
