When he first heard about United Way’s Raise Your Hand Tutoring program, it wasn’t through a flyer or social media post—it was through his sister. Both were looking for ways to give back to their community, and Raise Your Hand felt like the perfect fit.
“I had done a bit of peer tutoring in middle school,” he said, “but I wanted to make a bigger impact.”
Now, that impact reaches right into the classrooms of Franklin Elementary School, where he tutors students in reading comprehension. Together, they work on vocabulary, reading speed, and—most importantly—confidence.
The Joy of Seeing Growth
For him, the best part of tutoring isn’t just watching reading skills improve—it’s watching confidence bloom.
“At the start, some students are shy or unsure of themselves,” he shared. “But after a few sessions, they open up. They laugh more, share their favorite books, and get excited when they realize how much they’ve improved. It’s really rewarding to see that change—not just in their reading but in how proud they feel of themselves.”
Leadership Beyond the Classroom
His passion for helping others doesn’t stop at tutoring. He also serves on United Way’s Youth Advisory Council, where students plan educational and community events. For the past two years, he’s led a Solar Power presentation for elementary students—bringing science to life through fun and engaging lessons.
Balancing his volunteer work with a full academic load isn’t always easy. He’s currently taking 16 AP classes and serves as President or Vice President of six honor societies and clubs at his high school. But with support from mentors like his Raise Your Hand District Coordinator, Mariana Hansen, he’s found the flexibility and encouragement to give his best in every role.
“Everyone in the program is so kind and understanding,” he said. “It’s not just about volunteer hours—it’s about being part of something that truly helps others grow.”
A Heart for the Future
Outside of volunteering, he’s a dedicated student and athlete, playing tennis for his high school and spending weekends shooting hoops or playing baseball and football with friends. He’s also an aspiring cardiologist or physician-scientist, a dream he’s nurtured since the second or third grade.
His sister’s involvement in Raise Your Hand makes the experience even more meaningful—something the two share as part of a family tradition of service.
“I don’t do this just because it looks good on a résumé,” he said. “I do it because I love it. Tutoring has become one of the highlights of my week.”
And through that love, he’s not only helping students strengthen their reading skills—he’s helping them believe in themselves.
