United Way of Greater Nashville and United Way Sumner County Announce Planned Merger to Expand Regional Impact

United Way of Greater Nashville (UWGN) announces its intent to merge with United Way of Sumner County later this summer, expanding its service area to ten counties. With the addition, United Way of Greater Nashville will serve Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Houston, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner, and Williamson counties.

The merger is contingent on the approval of the State Attorney General’s office. All necessary agreements have been submitted, and we anticipate a formal announcement later this summer.

This merger reflects a growing trend across United Way organizations nationwide: working regionally to tackle interconnected challenges and deliver regional solutions. The merger of the two organizations aims to ensure long-term sustainability, increase fundraising capacity, and expand their impact in Sumner County.

UWGN has a strong track record of successful mergers, demonstrating that combining resources strengthens local services, increases donor and volunteer engagement, and creates a stronger foundation for the future.

“This merger is about coming together to better serve our communities,” says United Way of Greater Nashville President and CEO Erica Mitchell. “As a proud Sumner County resident, I’ve seen firsthand the generosity and care of the community. This partnership will bring additional resources, stronger infrastructure, and even more opportunities to help our neighbors not just in Sumner County, but across the entire region.”

“This partnership means greater impact for Sumner County. Together, we can serve more people, deliver more effective solutions, and build a more resilient region,” said Kelley Crecelius, Board Chair, United Way of Sumner County.

The merger offers significant benefits for Sumner County while maintaining a focus on local priorities:

  • Continued Local Focus: Investments and strategies remain guided by Sumner County’s needs, with local voices shaping decisions.
  • Expanded Volunteer Network: Hands On powered by UWGN has already begun the work of connecting nonprofit partners in Sumner County with volunteers in the community.
  • More Resources: Stronger fundraising efforts and new partnerships aim to bring additional funding and support to the community.
  • Greater Stability: Streamlined administrative functions and integrated operations strengthen the financial and operational foundation for long-term success.
