Supporting our Military Heroes
United Way of Greater Nashville is dedicated to serving active-duty military, veterans, and their families across our nine-county footprint.
Our mission is to connect these heroes with essential, free resources—from housing support and employment opportunities to mental health services and financial assistance—especially as many veterans and their families across our region are living below the ALICE threshold, meaning they are working but still struggling to afford basic necessities.
Together, we honor all veterans and work to ensure they and their families can access the support they need and deserve in every community we serve.
Free Resources Available to You
Get Help. Give Help. United Way’s 211 Helpline
Across Tennessee, 211 plays a vital role in supporting individuals and families in our community. 211 is a free and confidential service helping people find the local resources they need for help in times of crisis and beyond. Dial 211 or text your ZIP code to 898-211 to get started. The 211 website has resources accessible 24/7. 211 Navigators are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, to provide tailored guidance for those in need.
The Gift of Reading
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails one new, age-appropriate book each month to any child from birth until age five at no cost to the family. The books arrive in the child’s name and are theirs to keep, read and enjoy. We welcome every child from birth to age 5 in every family to participate. Parents are encouraged to enroll siblings so that each child can receive their own book in the mail. If you would like to enroll a child or children under the age of 5, click here.
Returning Dollars into the Community
The IRS created the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free tax preparation for low-income and at-risk taxpayers with the help of community partners and volunteers. Each year, United Way volunteers help thousands of individuals and families prepare their taxes. All filing options available at unitedwayfilefree.com.
