United Way of Greater Nashville’s Raise Your Hand tutoring program is expanding to Hickman County Schools this school year, bringing free academic support to local elementary students and creating new opportunities for volunteers to make a direct impact.
Beginning September 14, Raise Your Hand will serve first- through fifth-grade students in two Hickman County elementary schools, helping children strengthen reading and math skills through after-school tutoring. Hickman County Schools joins Cheatham, Clarksville-Montgomery, Dickson, Franklin Special, Robertson and Williamson County Schools as part of the program’s growing Middle Tennessee footprint.
“Hickman County is proud to partner with United Way to bring the Raise Your Hand tutoring program to our students. This partnership will allow our students the opportunity to refine and accelerate their grade-level learning and will help to ensure these students achieve academic success. We look forward to working with United Way and we can’t wait to watch our students soar,” said Angie Manor, Ed.S, Instructional Supervisor – K-5 / 9-12.
Raise Your Hand partners with school administrators and teachers to provide tutoring sessions that help students who are struggling with reading and math. Volunteers work alongside teachers in the classroom after school, offering one-on-one and small-group support that helps children build confidence, master classroom concepts and move toward success.
Volunteers commit to one hour per week for up to 10 weeks. No teaching experience is required, and training is provided. Tutoring is flexible and scheduled around volunteer availability, making it an accessible opportunity for adults, college students and high school students who want to make a meaningful difference.
Participation is completely free for students and includes snacks and transportation home.
