3 Ways to File Your Tax Returns
File online with a virtual tax preparer
We’ve teamed with GetYourRefund.org to help you file your taxes online with the help of certified VITA volunteers. To file with an tax preparer online, your household income must be under $66,000, and to file yourself online, your income must be under $79,000.
Starting on January 31, you can access Get Your Refund, an encrypted, secure platform. After you click Get Started select File taxes with help. With this option, you’ll answer the same questions as you would at a VITA site. Be prepared to use your phone to take photos of your tax documents. An IRS-certified VITA volunteer will call you for an interview and quality review. The GetYourRefund website is available in Spanish and an additional 120 languages. Click here to watch our “How To” video.
File yourself using free tax software
File for free on your own using United Way’s MyFreeTaxes program. You will need your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) found on your 2023 tax return to get started. Or, get a transcript at irs.gov/transcript. There are no income limits for this self-filing option.
File in-person at a VITA site
VITA’s in-person and drop-off locations are open to households that made less than $76,000 in 2024. Use this map to find a tax site in Middle Tennessee. Visit our Tax Sites page for hours, locations and to book an appointment. Call 211 to find locations outside of Middle Tennessee.
