“I help families who do not speak English and do not read and write.”
Most of the families that Mary serves cannot speak, read or write in English. Through her role at Nations Ministry Center, a United Way funded partner, Mary helps refugees rebuild their lives—many of whom have fled persecution, war, trauma and deprivation. All in search of a better life.
When the pandemic hit, Nations Ministry received funding from the COVID-19 Response Fund to help the families they serve stay afloat while they were out of work and struggled to navigate social services and the help that was available to them.
“One family I worked with was a single mom with three children. She does not read or write and couldn’t go to work because her children had to stay home and learn virtually. Then she got COVID. So, we helped her with applications and trying to gather the information she needed. She was very grateful for the help and our work.”
