When Derrick entered the Work Readiness program, he carried with him a quiet struggle—shyness and a lack of confidence. Speaking about himself, especially to unfamiliar people, was something he had avoided for years. But everything began to change during the program’s interview preparedness segment.
With encouragement and practice, Derrick found his voice. He stepped into his interview with confidence, pursued a position he was passionate about, and aced it. He was hired on the spot. Reflecting on the experience, Derrick shared that the program helped him overcome a long-standing fear of self-expression. “I never thought I’d be able to speak about myself so confidently,” he said. That breakthrough will serve him not just in his career, but in every area of his life. Today, Derrick is thriving at KabinArt.
This transformation was made possible through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment & Training (E&T), which provides individuals receiving SNAP benefits with the tools and opportunities to build skills, gain work experience, and move toward long-term self-sufficiency.
As Derrick put it: “SNAP E&T changes people’s lives—keep helping others.”
As a SNAP E&T partner with United Way of Greater Nashville, Men of Valor delivers life-changing programs that restore lives, rebuild futures, and help individuals thrive beyond re-entry. Derrick’s story is just one of many examples of the power of this partnership. Derrick was a motivated participant throughout the program, and his success is a testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets determination. Way to go, Derrick!
